Some of my earlier photographs…
I had bought a point and shoot camera (Pentax WG-2) with built in GPS (one of the few, back then). I originally bought it so I could have a camera that could handle water when I kayak – I would also know where I took the picture. It served its purpose at the time and died a valiant death snorkeling in salt water in Bonaire (ABC islands) last year.
My wife and I went to Ireland back in 2012 and went on a bus tour and I took the WG-2. We stayed in some pretty cool places. I told her, “If I’m going to Ireland, I’m staying in a castle!” Some of the highlights were – checking out Trinity College1, the Book of Kells and its associated library2, “trying” to see the Cliffs of Moher (it was extremely foggy that morning3), staying in a castle “Ashford Castle” on Lough Corrib4, seeing where the “Quiet Man” was filmed in Cong, seeing the “Museum of Country Life”, seeing Slieve League in Sligo, staying in Donegal, going on a catamaran boat ride on Irelands only “Loch”, visiting the Belleek factory in Northern Ireland (N.I.), seeing the “Giants Causeway” in N.I., staying in Belfast, N.I., seeing the Titanic museum there, and in Dublin seeing Kilmainham (political) jail, Jamesons distillery, checking out a “snug” room down the block from the Shelbourne Hotel. Ireland was beautiful. One thing that I found particularly interesting is how quickly the city transitions to the country (only several distinct blocks of suburbs).

- The “Trinity Capital Hotel” was very eclectic from a decor standpoint. When we visited Trinity College, we took a student led tour which was informative and quaint. ↩︎
- We never got to take a picture of much there, but it was amazing to see in person – however they didn’t allow cameras. ↩︎
- On a side note – kind of a funny story about that. It was so foggy that we legitimately couldn’t see 10ft. We are standing there wondering if the fog would ever lift. I’m standing by a barbwire fence not thinking too much about it and suddenly the fog swirls due to a breeze and as it turns out, I’m standing 10ft from a cow! I never saw, heard or smelled him. Eventually, the fog kind of moved and we were able to see the cliffs (kind of). ↩︎
- Kind of a cool story about the cruise on the “Loch” also, we were entertained by an older gent that as it turns out, was in the movie “the quiet man” (see the pix) when he was a young boy. He entertained us on the boat ride and told stories as we traversed the lake – singing in his brough and playing the accordion. I guess he did it for fun and got free boat rides out of the deal. Also on that lake, there was an old ruined Celtic monastery with a tombstone in the shape of a tiller and was supposed to be from 400BC. ↩︎
